DESCRIPTION:Hybrid Meeting! Join in person in Portland\, Oregon\, at the IPRC or register to receive the Zoom link.\n\n\n\nSherri K will be leading this hands on workshop exploring how gel plates can be used for creating prints\, from the simple to the complex. Printed paper can be used for collage elements or you can create stand-alone monoprints. Gel plates can also be used to create complex\, layered image transfers using magazines.\n\nMonoprinting is a type of printmaking where the intent is to make unique prints\, that may explore an image serially. While other methods of printmaking create editioned multiples\, the monoprint is editioned as 1 of 1. (from Wikipedia)\n\nSherri will bring an assortment of the necessary supplies for people to try out\, however\, if you are interested in doing more gel plate printing\, they can be purchased locally* or online. The "original" Gelli Plate is made by Gelli Arts\, but a few other companies make a version as well. Gel Press make several different sizes and shapes\, they also have a great beginner's guide to gel printing. *Blick has both Gelli Arts and Gel Press plates at the downtown PDX location.\n\nIf you're feeling extra crafty\, and are comfortable using animal products\, you can make your own gelatin plate with a recipe like this one.\n\nSuggested Supplies:\n\n- Commercial gel plate or homemade gelatin plate\n\n\n- Acrylic paints (medium to heavy body works best)\n\n\n- Brayer for applying paint evenly\n\n\n- Baren or wooden spoon for burnishing\n\n\n- Paper to print onto\n\n\n- Waste paper to clean excess paint onto\n\n\n- Water bottle\n\n\n- Paper towels\n\n\n- Work surface protection \n\n\n- Magazine images or toner based prints (for image transfers)\n\n\n- Stencils\n\n\n- Tools for creating patterns on plate (e.g.\, acrylic paint tools)\n\n\nThe Mixed-Media Collage Artists Guild (MMCAG) is a program supported by the Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC)!\n\nWhile MMCAG events are free\, we suggest supporting all of the amazing programming at IPRC\, a 501c3 charitable organization\, by offering a small contribution when you register for this event ($6 suggested).\n\n

CATEGORIES:Papercraft
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid Event: In person in Portland\, Oregon\, and online on Zoom!\n\nJoin us for two explorations of paper marbling\, one traditional and one playful: suminagashi and using shaving foam! The papers we create are excellent to incorporate into collages\, use for making cards\, tags\, or other paper crafts.\n\nThe art of creating marbled paper began around the 12th century in Japan. Suminagashi\, or "floating ink" was done by dropping sumi ink onto water and gently blowing the floating ink to create smoke like patterns. Paper is then floated on the top to pick up the ink\, often two prints can be made from one application of ink.\n\nOur other approach is one that has become a popular activity for kids\; marbling paper with shaving foam. Ink is dropped onto a smooth layer of shaving foam and swirled with skewers or hands to make a fun marbled effect. Paper is set onto the shaving foam to pick up the ink. The foam is then scraped off the paper revealing the marbled results. This approach is quick and doesn't require as much time for the paper to dry. This approach also can use a greater variety of kinds of pigments.\n\nMaterials (both):\n\n- Baking dish or tray to hold foam or water (butcher tray palettes also work)\n\n\n- Paper cut to fit your tray (try different type of paper!)\n\n\n- Bamboo skewers\, popsicle sticks\n\n\n- Paper towels or cloth towels to hold wet paper while drying\, plus extra paper towels for clean up\n\n\nMaterials* (suminagashi):\n\n- Sumi ink\n\n\n- 2 small cups to hold ink and dispersant (soap)\n\n\n- 2 paint brushes with fine\, flexible bristles that can hold a good amount of ink without dripping. There are traditional sumi brushes as well.\n\n\nMaterials (foam marbling):\n\n- Shaving foam (must be foam\, not gel)\n\n\n- Food dye\, ink (fountain pen\, India\, acrylic)\, liquid watercolor\n\n\n- Pipettes or eyedroppers for ink\n\n\n- Spatula\n\n\n- Plastic ruler\n\n\n*In addition to traditional sumi ink made from wood ash\, you can get Aitoh Boku-Undo sumi inks in bright colors\, and in kits for suminigashi\, from a variety of retailers. The kits for suminigashi often have eyedropper bottles so brushes and cups for the ink are not needed.\n\nSensory Note: For anyone experiencing audio or visual sensitivity\, please note that the IPRC is situated under a skatepark\, which creates occasional disruptive background noise\, and the lighting in the studio and classroom space is primarily fluorescent. We do have ear plugs available for members.\n\nHealth Note: We will continue to properly wear our masks\, per IPRC policy\, when gathering in person to support the health of our members and their families who live with chronic health conditions. Please keep up to date on your boosters!\n\nWe Keep US Safe!\n\n

CATEGORIES:Social,Art Exchange,Art
DESCRIPTION:Note the date change\, we're meeting the second Saturday!\n\nJoin us at IPRC the for our fifteenth annual winter social! We'll enjoy an exchange of art\, randomly distributed among the attendees and we'll be making add-n-pass collage postcards. If you have any art supplies that no longer bring you joy we'll have a table to bring supplies to find a new home.\n\nGift Exchange\n\nPlease do not feel pressured into making something spectacular\, this is just a chance to give a simple token of your own creation. You can go with something seasonal\, but it's not required. Feel encouraged to make something that brings you joy and delight in seeing it bring joy to another artist in the group!\n\nBefore arriving put your piece of artwork in a plain paper bag or box. Do NOT show anyone what you have made\, it is a surprise. That's it! NO fancy wrapping on the bag/box\, but you can feel free to get as fancy as you want inside!\n\nEach bag or box is given a number. After all the secret gifts have arrived and have been numbered each person gets to draw a random number and match that number to the appropriate bag/box. If you happen to get your own package you redraw.\n\nUnlike a "white elephant" type exchange\, we do not trade the gifts around. We gratefully enjoy the artwork that we receive.\n\nActivity: Add-n-Pass Postcards!\n\nSupplies:\n\n- 1 5x7 piece of cardstock\, watercolor paper\, or mixed media paper\n\n\n- Colored pencils\, pens\, paint markers\, etc.\n\n\n- washi tape\, paper scraps\, embellishments\, cutout images\, etc.\n\n\n- glue or glue stick (no gel medium or ModgePodge\, it takes too long to dry)\n\n\nWe'll start by writing our own name on the back of our card then adding one thing to the blank card. Then we hand off our card to the person to our right and a timer is set for few minutes. The next person will add an element and pass it on to the right when the timer runs out (this gets announced). Eventually the card makes it back to the original artist with an addition from every person attending the event.\n\nWe can all look forward to a wonderful time of socializing and showing off our gifts.\n\nGuests are welcome\, however it is nice to make sure they have something to exchange or bring something extra so they can participate too.\n\nThe Mixed-Media Collage Artists Guild (MMCAG) is a program supported by the Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC)!\n\nWhile MMCAG events are free\, we suggest supporting all of the amazing programming at IPRC\, a 501c3 charitable organization\, by offering a small contribution when you register for this event ($6 suggested).\n\nSensory Note:\n\nFor anyone experiencing audio or visual sensitivity\, please note that the IPRC is situated under a skatepark\, which creates occasional disruptive background noise\, and the lighting in the studio and classroom space is primarily fluorescent.
